About Zinc

Zinc alloys are widely used for die-cast components that combine detailed geometry, dimensional consistency, and finish-ready surfaces. Zinc alloy machining can be used after casting to produce critical holes, threads, and mating features.

Grades for Review
Zamak 3, Zamak 5, ZA-8, SHG zinc
Zamak 3 A general-purpose zinc die casting alloy with a balance of castability, dimensional stability, and finishing characteristics.
Material Condition As pressure die-cast Tensile Strength 315 MPa Yield Strength (0.2% Offset) 276 MPa Elongation at Break 7.73% Brinell Hardness 97 HB Density Approx. 6.60 g/cm³
Zamak 5 A zinc alloy with higher strength and hardness than Zamak 3, suitable for parts that require additional mechanical performance.
Material Condition As pressure die-cast Tensile Strength 331 MPa Yield Strength (0.2% Offset) 295 MPa Elongation at Break 3.43% Brinell Hardness 114 HB Density Approx. 6.76 g/cm³
ZA-8 Zinc Alloy A zinc-aluminum alloy used for cast components that require higher strength and creep resistance. Availability depends on project review.
Material Condition As pressure die-cast Tensile Strength 386.8 MPa Yield Strength (0.2% Offset) 318.6 MPa Elongation at Break 3.41% Brinell Hardness 95–110 HB Density Approx. 6.30 g/cm³
High-Purity Zinc Special High Grade zinc is commonly used for alloying and galvanizing. Its suitability and availability for custom parts require project review.
Material Condition SHG zinc ingot, ≥99.995% Zn Tensile Strength — Yield Strength (0.2% Offset) — Elongation at Break — Brinell Hardness — Density Approx. 7.14 g/cm³

Mechanical properties are typical values for pressure-die-cast specimens, 1.5 mm thick, tested at 20°C eight weeks after casting. Elongation uses a 70 mm gauge length. Alloy densities are approximate theoretical values at 21°C with zero porosity. Actual part properties depend on casting conditions and aging. SHG zinc is listed separately; dashes indicate values not specified here.

Advantages & Considerations of Zinc

Advantages

  • Detailed Cast Features: Suitable zinc alloys can reproduce fine details and compact features during die casting.
  • Dimensional Consistency: Die casting can produce repeatable part geometry when tooling and process conditions are controlled.
  • Finishing Options: Zinc castings can be prepared for plating, painting, and other compatible finishes.
  • Secondary Machining: Critical holes, threads, and mating surfaces can be machined after casting when required.
  • Production Efficiency: For suitable designs and quantities, die casting can reduce the amount of machining needed per part.

Considerations

  • Weight: Zinc alloys are denser than aluminum and magnesium alloys, which may affect weight-sensitive designs.
  • Temperature and Loading: Long-term loads and elevated temperatures require an assessment of strength and creep.
  • Tooling Investment: For zinc alloy prototyping or low volumes, compare tooling cost and lead time with the project’s validation needs.
